Day of Disaster Training
This course is made up of the following basic level disaster courses: Disaster Services: An Overview, Shelter Operations and Shelter Simulation. The purpose of this all-in-one basic level course is to introduce participants to the role of the Red Cross in the community's actions in prepparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters. Participants will be able to assess how to use their skills & abilities to strengthen the capacity of both the community & the Red Cross to better serve people affected by disaster. They will understand the mission of the Red Cross, the principles & values that support the mission & the expected behaviors of Red Cross volunteers and employees in the conduct of that mission and then will be given the next steps. Lastly, but certainly not lease, this course will prepare volunteers and employees of the Red Cross to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. In addition, participants will be provided with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter through a simulation.

Prerequisites: American Red Cross Volunteer Orientation and Online Background Check. This course is mandatory for all other disaster classes. Please note that this course is made up of the 3 basic disaster courses and if you have previously taken them you do not need to re-take anything. Please direct all questions to your Emergency Response Specialist.

Shelter Operations
The purpose of this basical level class is to prepare volunteers and employees of the Red Cross to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.

Shelter Simulation
The purpose of this basic level training is to provide participants with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter.

Psychological First Aid: Helping People in Times of Stress
The purpose of this basic level workshop is to enable participants to provide basic care, comfort and support to people who are experiencing disaster-related stress. This course provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve.

Disaster Frontline Supervisor (DFS) and DFS Simulation
The purpose of this course is to provide the basic knowledge, tools and resources necessary to develop effective disaster relief operation supervisors. This course is to familiarize supervisors with the processes and procedures involved in organizing and leading a team to deliver quality service in a disaster environment.

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance
The purpose of this basic level course is to prepare Red Cross employees & volunteers to perform the tasks of an Individual Client Services Casework Service Associate.

Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism: An Overview
The purpose of this basic level course is to provide basic information about the issues and safety concerns related to responding to a disaster incident in an environment involving Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism (WMD/T). Participants will learn about the knowledge, skills and abilities needed by disaster workers performing duties in this environment.

ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll
The purpose of this basic level course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to operate an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment safely and effectively to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster.

Disaster Assessment Basics
The purpose of this basic level course is to provide a general overview of the tasks performed by Red Cross Disaster Assessment workers in support of a disaster-relief operation and a local incident such as a single or multi-family fire.

Health Services Response Workshop
The purpose of this basic level workshop is to prepare licensed or certified health professionals to either work in their local chapter jurisdiction or to be deployed to a Red Cross Disaster Relief Operation and function as health professionals within the health services protocals.
