An Intern's Testimonial
Hi everyone, my name is Brittanee Berger, and I interned with the York-Adams Chapter American Red Cross in the fall of 2010. Ever since I can remember, I have volunteered with various organizations in the community I grew up in, and here in York County. I have worked with many non-profits including animal shelters, autism awareness, Alex’s lemonade stand, UNICEF and several others. Once I heard the York-Adams American Red Cross offered internships, I was quick to apply. The opportunity to be a Communications and Public Support Intern was a perfect opportunity for me to learn more about the non-profit sector, and help gain awareness of the organization within the community using skills I have learned. As a Red Cross intern, I was given the opportunity to be involved with the 8th Annual American Red Cross Heroes of York & Adams County breakfast, which gave me a phenomenal experience regarding planning and budgeting for an event in a non-profit setting. The event was extremely rewarding as I was hands-on with confirming the venue site, experiencing a business luncheon with a production company in Harrisburg, gathering sponsorship logos, setting up the actual event, and meeting the local heroes in the area. Throughout my time as an intern, I had the opportunity to utilize my communication skills by writing press releases and articles, writing facts and precautions about fire prevention, and sitting in on a disaster drill. The drill experience was fast paced and quite educational because I had to mentally remind myself that the disaster was just a drill; it felt real. Not only did I have the chance to utilize my studies at York College, but I also had the chance to expand my knowledge in the non-profit world. More importantly, I worked with a tremendous organization and a remarkable staff. The people I worked with and the overall experience secured reassurance in my goal to work with a non-profit organization upon graduation in 2012. I hope you too will research intern possibilities with the Red Cross because the experience is one-of-a-kind.
